Advise needed on maintenance free gardening.?

You should try out Rubber Mulch if you haven't yet... I can tell you from experience, it really lasts for years and it keeps all the weeds out! I didn't really think it would last for too long but I'm going on my 10th year with Rubber Mulch, and it's still looking lovely. It always looks neat and clean....I really recommend you get it.
