How to calm my dwarf hamster down?

I have had my dwarf hamster for 2 years now, but he was young when I got him. I'm starting to get kind of annoyed, because I hold him every day, but he is SO active! I can never just sit here with him on my stomach while i lay here doing homework. He always runs around, so active! He used to bite alot and it was unmanageable, but I have held him so often now that he doesn't bite, just runs. Another thing. When I put him down on the carpet (not in a ball), he starts off slowly, sniffing everything. Then starts picking up speed. Within 10 seconds he'll be taking off as fast as the little legs can take him! Then when i got to stop him, he squeals and jumps over my hands. I don't want to reach from above cause that will scare him. Is there any way to calm him more?
