Permanent Hair Straightening...?

Hi! I am wondering about permanently straightening my hair. I have very, very fine, thin and utterly unmanageable curly hair and am confused as what to do. I've read about relaxers and such, and am very worried if I will become bald or suffer severe hair loss and damage if I go through with it? Please tell me all you know....I am very worried.....
